A new diversion dam, at the site of the historic Tusher Dam near the town of Green River, is complete.
The National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) is inviting interested people to a public event on Wednesday, May 11 at 11 a.m. at the project site. The dam is on a spur off Hastings Road, approximately 6.5 river miles up river from the town of Green River. The access is approximately 5 miles up river from the town of Green River via Hastings Road. Turn North (up river) on Hastings Road just east of the Super 8 Motel.
Parking is limited near the diversion dam, but NRCS spokesman Reynaldo Leal said there will be people to direct traffic. There will be signs on Hastings Road directing people to the dam site.
Contrary to previous reports, the boat chute is not yet open and will not be open on May 11. Leal said river runners will have to wait until further tests have been done to make sure the chute is safe.
The boat chute is a new component of the project. A state-of-the-art water diversion system will assure farmers of irrigation water for their crops for many years. There is also a fish ladder that will allow fish to move freely up and down the river through the diversion dam.
The project cost $7.7 million and involved numerous partners. People will have an opportunity to ask questions during the event on May 11.
