Making the last games count, Carbon baseball wins two final home games

By Sierra Trujillo

The Carbon High School baseball team dragged out its last home games as long as possible on Tuesday, coming away with two wins against Juab High School in the doubleheader, including an extra-inning win.
“Great defense, great pitching. Just two well-played games,” said head coach Jeff Cisneros. “We’ll take two wins right now any way we can get them against a team that was ahead of us for second place, so that’s good.”
After eight scoreless innings in the first game, the Dinos had bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning and two outs recorded. Senior Mitch Olson came up to the plate and tallied two strikes against himself quickly with a foul tip and a swinging strike. Olson drove the next pitch into right field for a walk-off RBI single, scoring senior Anthony Maclean from third, who reached on an error by the pitcher.
When asked what he was thinking with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Cisneros responded “Please somebody get a hit. I mean, you know, I’ve tried everything. Tried bunting, we did bunt a couple times successful, but two or three times we weren’t successful. We had to earn that win and we’re going to have to earn every win from this point on so that’s what we want to do anyways.”
The Dinos excelled on defense in the game, with senior Cole Fossat leading from the mound. Fossat tallied 11 strikeouts and allowed just one hit in the game. On the offensive side, he went 2-3 with a double and two walks.
Carbon carried its stellar defense into the second game defeating Juab 3-2. The Dinos held Juab scoreless through six innings, while tallying their own three runs in the fifth and sixth.
The Dinos’ first run came on a passed ball, with senior Austin Henrie scoring from third. In the same inning, Fossat hit an RBI single, scoring Maclean who had reached on an error. The Dinos scored one more in the sixth inning on an RBI single by senior Dallyn Mower.
Olson started the game on the mound for the Dinos and pitched the complete seven innings, despite a rough seventh inning with Juab scoring their only two runs of the game. Olson got out of the jam and only allowed four hits in the game with three strikeouts and one walk.
The Dinos picked up the two wins on senior day, with each of the seven seniors starting and playing the entire second game.
“I’m glad they all got a chance to play. They all started the second game, they all played the entire game and they got a win, so that’s the best thing about the day,” said Cisneros. “Two wins on senior day, what more can you ask for?”
With the two wins, the Dinos evened their overall record for the season to 10-10 and to 6-5 in Region 12 play. With just one game left to play in the regular season, the Dinos will look to keep their record above .500 with a win in the final game against Juab on Friday. The Dinos also need to win to secure the second place Region 12 spot.
“Two good pitching performances today (Tuesday) and we have to follow that up Friday,” said Cisneros. “We’re going to make sure we get there nice and early. We have our pregame warm up the way we’re supposed to. Between now and then we’re going to work on a few things and hopefully just hit the baseball on Friday.”
