PRICE – Reid Clair Wilson, age 81, passed away June 28, quietly and peacefully at his home in Price, after enduring a long, debilitating illness.
Reid was born March 20, 1934, in Huntington, Utah, to Leonard Wilson and Clara Lela Grange Wilson. He married Marshan Ungerman, and later divorced.
Reid was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Price Lions Club, Carbon Country Sheriff’s Posse Riding Club, Iron Workers Union and UMWA. He served as regional director of the Utah State Riding Club Association. As an ironworker, Reid worked on the Valley Music Hall, the Aztec building at 5th South and 10th East.
He worked at Horse Canyon Coal and Lion Coal Company at Wattis. He also worked at UDOT, then Swisher Coal Company and Plateau Mining Company. In 1983, he was named by Plateau to head the initial mine development work at Twenty Mile Coal near Steamboat Springs, Colorado. He took a volunteer crew of miners from Plateau with him. This project was completed very successfully for Reid and Plateau. He then returned to Plateau with the position of shift foreman, retiring in 1996.
Immediately upon retirement, he volunteered to work with Rodney Lott and Dal Wells on the Church cattle ranch just south of Price. Days were long and work was hard, but Reid radiated happiness and satisfaction. “Cowboying” for the church was comparatively the happiest time of his life. He loved moving the cattle up the mountain range in the spring, and herding them back down in the fall.
He was an avid cowboy and exceptional horseman. He was proud of his horses: the muscular great Palomino, “Brook Gold”. The big black “Babe”; and, undoubtedly his favorite ever, the Red Dun, “Brandy”. He roped and competed on each of his horses, but Brandy was so fast out of the box, and put him right where he had to be! Brandy was a great horse!
When Reid was no longer able to ride horses, he returned to boating and fishing. He spent much time relaxing and enjoying his cabin on the shoreline at Scofield. Many peaceful days were spent with his dear friend, Paul Cook, on the lake and on the deck of the cabin. They did their share of snowmobiling during the winter for a number of years.
Reid is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mavis, daughters, Marsha Sherman, Sheila Stevenson, Kristy Johnson, and Julie Truman; son Tod (Kristy) Wilson, Carbonville; brothers, Bevan (Floann) Wilson. Huntington; Ernest (Karen) Wilson, Castle Dale; sister, Donna Kay (Ronald) Keener, Price; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his step-daughter, Marla (Terry) Marshall, Price; loving sisters-in-law, Doris Wilson, Ethel Wilson, Nelda Wilson and Linda Davis; many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by parents Leonard and Lela Wilson; brothers, Dick, Von, Grant, Bruce, Dale and sister Lela Ann VanBuren.
A special thank you to Debbie Madrigal, Michael Ellington, Kelly Jo Juggert, Tiffany Noyes, Errin Rauhala and the entire staff of Rocky Mountain Hospice for the loving care they provided Reid for the past 3 years.
