The Carbon and Emery Board of Realtors held a community held a Community Involvement Reception on May 20, where a check of a $1,000 was donated to the Habitat for Humanity of Castle Country.
After everyone had eaten dinner, a presentation was held showing victims of the floods that ravaged Carbon County in the fall of 2014. More than 200 homes were destroyed or damaged during that flood, with and estimated $2.5 million in damage. Of those affected, almost none had flood insurance. Seeing the devastation, the Carbon and Emery Board of Realtors in partnership with the Utah Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors came together to donate money to those affected.
The money was collected from the interest off the brokers trust accounts and fees from realtors license plates. The money was used to pay for one months rent/mortgage, to let those affected focus on repairing the damage caused by the floods.
The program, known as “A Brush with Kindness”, is a program designed to help those in need. It is a non-profit organization that is designed mostly for handicapped, elderly, or low-income residents that need assistance. In the case of the elderly, if they have money for repairs but are unable to work, then the program will provide workers to assist in repairs. The program is not free, but a temporary loan with no interest and no fees, in order to allow those in need the ability to repair the damages at a time where they may not have the money to do so.
