Carbon High displays potential on the field in front of large home crowd
As the pads popped, the crowd cheered with excitement and the cheerleaders waved their pom poms, it was the signal to another start for the Carbon High Football team.
The 2014 season got kicked off with the annual Blue-White scrimmage on Friday evening at the Carbon High Football Field as a large crowd gathered to get their first glimpse of the new-look Dinos and their new Head Coach Jan Jorgensen.
Instead of breaking the players into two teams, Jorgensen used the occasion as a scrimmage to get everyone on the team a little bit of playing time with the upperclassmen solidifying their positions while allowing the younger players a chance to make an impact on the big stage.
With a new offense in place, Carbon showed a glimpse of the future of what the read-option can do but they also displayed some growing pains that the coaches will be working on before the season opener on Friday, Aug. 22 when the Dinos host Grand High at 7 p.m.
“I learned that we’ve come a long ways since starting practice,” Jorgensen after the scrimmage. “But I also learned that we still need to come a long ways if we want to beat a team like Grand.”
Jorgensen said the team will be focusing on establishing who will be starting and playing big roles through the final practices leading into the home opener.
“Players are still working into their positions right now,” he said.
As it was the first time for the players to be on the field in front of the crowd, it was also a first for Jorgensen as a head coach.
“I was a little nervous coming into the scrimmage,” he said. “It was the first time for me out there as a coach and not as a player. But as time went on, I felt comfortable on the sideline.”
The Dinos will be looking to avenge last season’s loss 48-7 loss to Grand on the road in the season opener.
“We need to clean a few things up in practice this week and hopefully we’ll be ready to compete, and hopefully, win our first game,” he said.
