Raymond Winkelried

HELPER/LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Raymond Winkelried, formerly of Helper, passed away June 30, 2008 at his home in Las Vegas, Nev.
Raymond was born on April 10, 1927 in Peerless to August and Anna Verant Winkelried. In 1934, the family moved to Helper and started the Square Deal Store. Raymond was always at his father’s side, learning the business as a young boy. After the first day of his senior year, he came home and informed his father that he wanted to quit school. His father gave in and Raymond began working full-time in the family store.
When he was 12 years old, he purchased his first rental property from his father for $65. The first thing he did was raise the rent to $3 per month. Working in the store and acquiring property became full-time passions for him.
At one time, he owned a total of 51 pieces of property in Carbon County. He also was a great collector of vintage automobiles.
His happiest memories of his early years were the fishing trips with his father and the short family trips to various destinations.
On Oct. 1, 1976, Raymond finally decided to retire from the grocery business and devote his time to caring for his mother who lived with him and overseeing his numerous rental properties.
As time went on and with the passing of his mother, Raymond decided to start a new chapter in his life so he moved to Las Vegas, Nev., where he married Jeanne Day. He adapted quickly to the area. He easily made his way around and soon became well-known to the local merchants and other business people. He adopted the local fashion of wearing shorts and even wore them in the winter with a coat.
Raymond found that he had a particular fondness for playing nickel slots and would spend a few hours each week indulging in this pastime. His happiest times were those spent going to the different parks and with Jeanne and his little dog, Baby.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife and his precious little dog.
Memorial services and interment were July 7 at Davis Memorial Mortuary and Cemetery in Las Vegas, Nev.
Raymond, you will be dearly missed by all of us who loved you.
