Both CHS Track Teams do Well at Meets

A Carbon relay runner stays with an Emery competitor.

On April 25 the Carbon track team went to a qualifying meet at Emery High School.
Paul Goodrich won his favorite race by a large margin of victory, while Kent Olson finished in fifth place in the 3200 meter race. Both boys also placed first and fifth in the 1600 meter run.
In the 1600 meter relay the boys lost to Emery by 6/100 of a second. Goodrich ran the anchor leg and came from 50 yards behind to barely getting beat out at the finish line. The other three teammates who ran a great relay leg were Olson, Jacob Perez, and James McKendrick.
Travis Hepworth placed fourth in the boys 110 meter hurdles, while Brett Wells placed fifth in the 300 meter hurdles. Perez placed 4th in the 400 meter sprint, and sixth in the 200 meter sprint.
In the throwing events McKendrick finished third, and Levi Branch fourth.
The Smith girls swept the 3200 meter run with Elizabeth first, Samantha second, and Patricia third.
“They went on to thrill us with Samantha placing first in the 1600 meter run and Patricia winning the 800 meter run,” said assistant track coach Stewart Foster. “All three Smith girls, along with Ashley Anderson, had a close finish, but pulled out a victory in the 1600 medley relay.”
Amie Stewart placed fifth in the girls 100 meter hurdles and third in the 300 meter hurdles. Allie Stewart placed 6th in the 100 meter hurdles.
Brittany Banning ran to a great first place finish in the 100 meter sprint. She also placed fifth in the high jump. Dani Martino placed third in the high jump, and Carly Martino finished sixth in the long jump.
Nine teams competed at the meet, but no team scores were kept.
On April 29 the team went to Richfield for a qualifying meet. Seventeen teams competed that day including teams from 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A schools. The competition was very strong with a lot of great times, heights and throws measured.
Goodrich posted his best time to date in the 3200 meter run. He ran a 10:07.84 to place second. Jared Richens and McKendrick had great improvement and ran well in the 1600 meter and 800 meter run.
Banning placed second in the girls 100 meter run. She also qualified for state, with a time of 13.12 seconds. Dani Martino placed fith in the girls high jump and looked good in the 100 and 200 meter sprints.
All three Smith girls ran well with Samantha placing fourth in the 1600 meter run and Patricia placing fourth in the 800 meter run. Elizabeth and Patricia both had personal best times.
Carbon will be co-hosting the region track meet at their track with Juan Diego on May 11.
