Lyle Nelson
PRICE – Lyle J. Nelson, age 92, passed away March 5, 2005 in Elmo surrounded by his family.
He was born Feb. 27, 1913 in Ferron, to Niels Christian and Caroline Olsen Nelson. He married Gladys Stevenson Jan. 15, 1946 in Tazewell, Va. After her passing, he married Nola Neilson, who also preceded him in death.
He enjoyed traveling, fishing and sports. He was a member of the LDS Church and a proud member of the UMWA Local 6363.
Lyle is survived by sons, Robert and Bev Nelson of Price; Randy and Tonya Nelson of Elmo; daughter-in-law, Candy Nelson of West Valley; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to Gladys and Nola, Lyle was preceded in death by sons, Roger and Steven.
Graveside services will be Tuesday, March 8, noon, in the Price City Cemetery. Friends may call at Fausett Mortuary from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. the day of services.

Harold Simmons
LAWRENCE – Alma Harold Simmons, passed away March 6, 2005 after a long life filled with a loving family, many good friends, much happiness, and a wonderful sense of humor.
He was born Dec. 20, 1919 to Joshua and Mary Ellen Ammonette Simmons in Gilmer, Texas. Married Helen Elizabeth Holst Sept. 20, 1940 and with her shared 62 years of marriage.
He had a long and distinguished career of 33 years with the Rio Grande Railroad. He was a successful farmer and rancher, being recognized as “Farmer of the Year” in 1978. He adored his family, always putting their needs ahead of his own. Because of his warmth and wit, he was always surrounded by good friends. He liked a good poker game with his buddies, happy children, good horses and fat cattle.
He is survived by daughter, Shari Carrol, Holladay; son, Tim (Diane) Simmons, Lawrence; five grandchildren, Alice Blossom, Texas; Mark (Donna) Carroll, Washington; Sara (Jason) Lamb, Helper; Paul (Brianne) Simmons, Lawrence; Josh Simmons, Lawrence; 12 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Gerald Simmons, Ogden. Preceded in death by wife, Helen; and seven brothers and one sister.
Graveside service Thusday, March 10, 11 a.m., Lawrence Cemetery. Friends and family may call at Mitchell Funeral Home, Wednesday, March 9, 6 to 8 p.m.
Essie Winn
PRICE – Essie Doss Winn, age 99, passed away March 3, 2005 in Price.
She was born May 23, 1905 in Shawnee, Okla., to John and Fannie Danella Sivley Doss. She married Ralph P. Winn June 15, 1929 in Price where they have resided since that time.
Essie’s life revolved around her large family. She was a talented homemaker, seamstress and cook. She was a member of the LDS Church.
Essie is survived by children, Velma (Paul) Dimick of Price; Mark (Lois) Winn of Price; Craig (Grace) Winn of Salt Lake City; Elaine (Jim) Lindsey of Brigham City; Sally (Arvil) Rhinehart of Edgwood, N.M.; Frank Whipple of Price; Ilene Winn of South Jordan; JoAnn Sharpe of Provo; 45 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren. Preceded in death by husband, Ralph P. Winn; daughter, Pauline Whipple; sons, John R. and Richard P. Winn.
Funeral services were Monday, March 7 at Fausett Mortuary Chapel in Price. Burial, Price City Cemetery.
Karen ‘Hope’ Anderson
HUNTINGTON – Karen “Hope” Anderson, age 81, passed away March 5, 2005 in Ferron surrounded by her family.
She was born June 7, 1923 in Mutual to George and Karen May Sitterud Young. She was raised in Orangeville and graduated from South Emery High. She married Soren Arthur Anderson Dec. 27, 1947 in Orangeville, solemnized Oct. 14, 1948 in the Logan LDS Temple.
Hope loved her family and lived her life that way. She loved it when the family was camping and fishing. After the death of her husband, she continued to camp in the Joe’s Valley area with Beverly and Isabelle.
Hope was an avid Jazz fan and never missed a game with her friend, Donna. She enjoyed spending time with her sister, Ruth.
As a member of the LDS Church, she served in numerous callings.
She is survived by her children, Brenda and Mike Horton, Arthur Gale and Mavoreen Anderson and Roger Lee and Michelle Anderson, all of Huntington; 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Soren Arthur Anderson; her parents; one sister and four brothers.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 9, at 11 a.m. at the Huntington 1st LDS Ward Chapel, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Burial, Huntington Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Steven Spooner
PRICE – Steven Lee Spooner, age 44, passed away Feb. 25, 2005 in Moab.
He was born March 8, 1960 in Othello, Wash., to Ronald J. and Joyce L. Lovell Spooner.
Steven loved the outdoors, rappelling, fishing, climbing, camping, 4-wheeling and most of all time spent with his family and friends. Steve loved being a backyard mechanic and mini stock racing at Desert Thunder Raceway.
Steve was a dear man and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by wife, Tonia Dawn, of Price; children, Alissa Dawn, Tristan Michael, Calista Marie and Paul Alan, all of Price; in-laws, Wesley Paul and Susan Hilliard, Titus and Jackie Hilliard, Ernest and Lurrine Lopez, all of Huntington; and Jesus and Tina Maldonado of Springville. Preceded in death by parents; and brother, Alan.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 9, 6 p.m., Fausett Mortuary in Price. A family dinner will be held earlier in the day at 1 p.m. at the Huntington 3rd Ward LDS Church. All family and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Spooner family memorial fund at Eastern Utah Community Credit Union.
Elizabeth Nielsen
PRICE – Elizabeth Althera Jones Williams Nielsen, affectionately called “Lizzie,” returned home to her Heavenly Father on March 2, 2005.
She was born Jan. 10, 1908 at Clear Creek to John Johnson and Fanny Rebecca Lucas Jones. She was the oldest child of eight children.
She married Lenard Stephen Williams Oct. 21, 1925 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Their home was blessed with five children, Rea “J” Williams (Fred Tatton), Wellington; Donna “V” Williams (Bob Williams), both deceased; Lenard Lamond Williams (Jaselene), Price; Lynwood Stephen, deceased (Phyllis Bendixsen), Salt Lake City; and Terry Lavell (Marianne), Salt Lake City.
Elizabeth was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout her life. She served in different organizations, Sunday School, MIA, Relief Society and Primary. She was a visiting teacher for 70 years.
In 1948, she joined the Amere club where she met and made many friends.
After her family was raised, she worked for the Carbon County School District as a hot lunch lady at the Durrant School. She enjoyed being around little children.
Lenard passed away March 12, 1975 and she married Wilford Lewis Nielsen Jr. Aug. 4, 1979. Wilford died Aug. 27, 1988.
Elizabeth was able to live in her home that Lenard and she purchased in 1945 for 58 years. She was 95 and, although she hated to leave her home where she had so many fond memories, she moved to the Heirloom Inn where she continued to live until the time of her death.
She is survived by three children; 17 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Wilma McArthy, Orem; brothers, Melvin Jones, Salt Lake City; Ross Jones (Yvonne) Price; stepchildren, Lewis (Grethe) Nielsen, Centerfield; Lynn (Carol) Nielsen, Sandy; Dorothy (Jay) O’Driscoll, Canyon Lake, Calif.; Leah (Glen) James, Helper; and Donna Lue (James) Mullins, Brigham City. Also preceded in death by sister, Florence Wallace; and brothers Walter Willis and Joe Jones.
Services for Elizabeth were Saturday, March 5 at the LDS 8th Ward Chapel in Price.
Leonard Jewkes
GREEN RIVER – Leonard Kay Jewkes, age 83, passed away March 5, 2005 at the Logan Regional Hospital.
He was born Sept. 8, 1921 in Orangeville, to Alma Gardner and Emeline Cox Jewkes. He married Dora Deane Peterson Jan. 22, 1942 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Leonard loved to golf. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in a variety of callings including ward clerk, counselor in the bishopric and young men’s president. Leonard served for 30 years with the Utah Highway Patrol and three years as a corrections officer at the state penitentiary. After retiring from the Highway Patrol, he was a representative for the Utah State Division of Aging & Adult Services. He was a lifetime member of the Green River volunteer fire department.
Leonard is survived by wife, Dora Deane Jewkes, Green River; daughters, Carol Jeanne Austin of Hyrum; Karen Maria Barker of College Ward; daughter-in-law, Rita Ann Jewkes of Green River; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Also survived by brothers, Alma Hue Jewkes of Sandy; and Thomas Samuel Jewkes of St. George. Preceded in death by parents; three sisters; six brothers; son, Leonard Dean Jewkes; and grandson, Cody John Austin.
Funeral services will be Friday, March 11, noon, at the Green River LDS Church where a viewing will be held Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and also one hour prior to the service. Burial, Elgin Cemetery in Green River under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
If we were to ask dad what he wanted us to say about him when he died, his reply would be a simple “It’s up to you”. Well, dad, this time it is up to you. Continue to watch out for mom, continue to remind us of your excellent example, help us choose the right.
Gladyn Nelson
FERRON – Gladys B. Nelson was the last living member of the Mary Ann Hansen, James Ormandy Braithwaite family of seven children.
Gladys was born April 26, 1902 in Manti. She married Bryant Andrew Nelson Nov. 14, 1921 in Manti. Later sealed in the Manti LDS Temple.
She raised her children during the Great Depression, the welfare of her family was her priority. She always had animals and a large garden to care for. Gladys made many quilts and crocheted many lovely and useful items. She served as visiting teacher, Sunday School teacher, counselor in the Relief Society and president of the young women’s MIA. Mother had many life long friends, her home was always open to friends and family. She and Bryant loved to camp and fish.
In November 1997 Gladys moved into Turnquist Retreat at Elmo, under the wonderful care of Caleen and Butch Wilcox and their caring staff.
Surviving children are Dora Dean N. Snow, Salt Lake City; Bryant Glade Nelson (Becky), Clawson; James F. Nelson (Catherine), Castle Dale; and Earl Ray Nelson, Ferron, a posterity of 27 grandchildren, 76 great-great-grandchildren and 32 great-great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Helen N. Sorensen, residing at the Ferron Rest Home. Preceded in death are LaRue N. Petitti (John J.), Price; Glenna twin to Glade and Joseph twin to James.
Funeral services will be held in the Ferron Blue Hills LDS Ward, 35 W. 200 N. State Street on Thursday, March 10. Viewing, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Funeral services 12 noon. Interment, Ferron City Cemetery.
Carm Priano
HELPER – Our loving mother, grandmother, sister and dear friend, Carmella Saccomanno Priano, age 92, passed away March 2, 2005 in Price.
Born Nov. 2, 1912 in Spring Glen, to Ralph and Maria Theresa Potestio Saccomanno. Married Anton S. Priano Jan. 10, 1945 in Price, he died Aug. 30, 1995.
Carm was an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and a lifelong resident of Carbon County. She enjoyed working alongside her many friends of JC Penney of Price prior to retiring. She enjoyed cooking and baking, and Carm made sure that everyone had their own little box of goodies. Carm lived for her family. Her big smile, warm hug and kiss made everyone feel like they were part of her family.
Survived by stepson, Elmo (Helen) Priano, Price; brother, Charlie Saccomanno, Spring Glen; sisters, Gemma Larcher, Price; Pauline (Joe) Lepore, Midvale; four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents; husband; sons, Anthony and James Priano; two grandchildren, Wendy and Lloyd; three brothers, James, Joe and Armand; and sister, Mary Colombo.
Funeral Mass, Monday, March 7, St. Anthony Catholic Church. Committal service, Mountain View Cemetery under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.
