Letter to the Editor: Disagrees about ban as violation of rights

By Sun Advocate

Editor:
I just wanted to comment on Richard Shaw’s Jan. 27 editorial about smoking.
I agree, government often goes overboard in restricting rights. But I must say, I disagree that this particular case is a violation of rights.
The problem with smoking is that the “protection” of “smoker’s rights” violates the rights of those who don’t smoke because of the health conflict. We all know how damaging second hand smoke is. It’s one thing if someone wants to fry their own lungs, but its another issue altogether if someone wants to fry my lungs without my consent!!
I agree, censorship is dangerous. But I think smoking is no different than illegal drugs….it’s just not right. If I had my way, I’d really tighten down on cigarette and liquor laws.
