Recently, it seems as if the Carbon High Lady Dinos basketball team has had a rough run in with the dreaded injury and illness bug. Game in and game out a new problem tends to arise which the Dinos must face and overcome.
The most recent event which dampened the Dinos spirits came this past week as the team traveled to Lehi to take on the Pioneers.
The Thursday evening event brought with it disappointment and frustration for the Dinos who entered the game broken and battered.
With many of the Dino athletes nursing illness, others were nursing ankle or knee injuries. A combination which would turn out to be crucial in the ending of the Region 8 match up.
The Carbon squad came out sluggish as they fell behind the Pioneers quickly. In fact, the Dinos were down, 16-9 by the end of the opening quarter.
The Dinos would fight back in the second quarter however as they narrowed the scoring average to 30-22 in favor of Lehi at the half.
The second half of action kicked off slowly for the Dinos who managed to only score eight points in the third quarter as the Pioneers opened up the lead by scoring 22 points of their own.
The fourth quarter found the Dinos launching a rally as they scored 23 points in the quarter. The scoring onslot was not enough however, as the Dinos fell to Lehi, 73-53.
Morgan Warburton has taken on the bulk of the scoring responsibilities since older sister, Chelsey Warburton was sidelined with a severe knee injury earlier this season.
The younger Warburton averages 23 points per game, but was reduced to only 13 points against Lehi last Thursday.
Danielle Julian lead the team in scoring with 21 points as Halee Rasmussen scored 10 points.
After going down early in the game with a sprained ankle, Brittney Pollastro did return to action late in the game and was able to score two points. Pollastro is expected to play this Thursday as the Dinos take on Delta, although the ankle is not at 100 percent.
“We’re just having a hard time getting out on the floor and playing strong because of injuries. We have three girls suffering from ankle injuries, two with knee and many of the athletes are down with the flu. Lehi was ready for us, and we didn’t play as well as we could have. We will be ready for Delta this Thursday however,” explained Dino’s head coach, Bruce Bean.
The loss to Lehi last week pushed the Pioneers to the Region 8 title for the year. The Dinos are not out however.
If the Carbon team wins this week against Delta, the team is guaranteed the second place finish in the region this year.
