| Matt King has had a tremendous season for the Dinos. King finished the regular season off with an overall record of 10-2. King is playing so well that he has a good chance at placing quite high at both the regional tournament and the state finals. |
The regular season came and went for the Carbon High tennis team. Throughout the season, the Dino athletes has shown great talent and determination proving to be a quite successful team.
The Dinos competed in the last regular season match up at home on Tuesday. The Dinos hosted the Delta Rabbits who found themselves being stomped by the mighty Dino team.
In singles match ups, Matt King once again proved to be a strong and consistant player. King faced Delta’s Chad Losee who last year took second place in the region at number one singles. This match pitted two of the best players in the region against one another and King came out victorious.
In the highly competative match, King took control to win the first set 6-4 and the second set 6-2. The victory put the feather in the cap for King who very well may face Losee in the region tournament.
At number two singles, Joe Harber improved his overall season record to 10-2 by easily defeating Andrew Dutson of Delta, 6-0, 6-0.
As the season has progressed, so has the level of play Harber has displayed. At first, Harber seemed unsure of himself on the court, but as the season progressed, so did Harber’s confidence. The talented Dino athlete is now facing a chance of a lifetime as he enters the region tournament quite successful.
Bo Christensn has also had a strong season for the Dinos. Unfortunately, Christensen will no longer play at number three singles for the Dinos. According to coach Kurt King, “Bo had a good chance of finishing in at least third place in the region if not higher. He has done a great job this year and shown many improvements. I really think that he had a good chance at finishing strong this season if he continued to play.”
Andrew Christensen will now step up to play in the number three singles category in the region tournament. Although Christensen has played a few times before in this position, he is not accustomed to playing the singles event.
Christensen did compete last Tuesday in singles competition, and the outcome was quite successful. Christensen stepped up to face Delta’s Jake Sanders who struggled to gain control of the set over. Christensen walked away with the win, 6-0, 6-1.
The doubles events also found the Dinos on top of their game. Kellen Spillman and Ryne Vogel have showed great improvements since the season began in March. In recent weeks, Spillman and Vogel have found great success in doubles competition. The team easily defeated Delta 6-1, 6-2. The match served as a good warm up for regional competition.
Sean Watkins and Neal Maynes also had a great set against Delta. The Dino team walked away with a 6-3, 6-1 win over the Rabbits. This win prepares the team both physically and mentally for the match ups still to come.
With the region tournament scheduled for Friday, the Dinos look forward to advancing in the region eight standings, thus advancing the players to the state finals to be held in St. George, May 11.
Coach King feels that this years team has a good chance at becoming state champions. First however, the Dinos must make it past the region tourney. “It should be a close tournament. Each team is pretty evenly matched and should make for an exciting event,” explained King.
