Carbon County has a tendency of being home to many great baseball players. Troy Grundy, who is member of Carbon High’s class of 2004, is a great example of how true this is.
The Carbon High baseball team benefited from Grundy for three years, and while pitching for the Dinos, helped them make it to third place in the state during his senior year on the team.
After graduating from Carbon High School and having an incredible year of baseball, Grundy was easily welcomed onto the College of Southern Idaho’s baseball team.
At CSI, he managed to be second in the league in strikeouts, with an overwhelming 85 during his first season in college. Grundy was recently made first team all-region pitcher for region 18, after playing an incredible season for the CSI team.
This all happened after an incredible career with Carbon High. Grundy was given a position on the all-state team his final year at Carbon High after having an incredible pitching season. While attending Carbon, Grundy averaged an amazing 14 strikeouts a game, and that’s just in high school.
Grundy was also recognized for the position of 2004 Gatorade Player of the Year. This award is thought to be the most prestigious award given to high school athletes. Every student athlete in every classification could qualify for this prestigious award, and by winning it, Grundy was counted as the best of the best for the entire state of Utah.
One athlete from each state is chosen for the Gatorade player of the year award. The award has been given to athletes across the nation for the last 20 years and 2004 is the only year this award has ever been given to a Carbon High athlete.
After several years of hard work, it finally paid off for Grundy, who after he graduated from Carbon High, was drafted by the Dodgers.

Apparently the Dodgers could even see the potential of Grundy, who was drafted by the team in the 41st round of the 2004 draft.
Grundy then decided to attend CSI, who is known for their great baseball team, while still being followed by the Dodgers.
Grundy then went on to complete a great season at CSI where he had an earned run average of 1.82 and a win loss record of 8-4.
Also during this incredible season, Grundy was credited with only allowing one home run while on the mound.
Grundy has signed with and will be attending CSI for another year but after his completion of next season, should have a great chance of playing in the majors.
Even though he wasn’t redrafted by the Dodgers this year, he will be eligible to be drafted as a free agent in 2006.
Grundy is sure to go far with his major league goals. He is noted for a solid pitching velocity of 86-88 miles per hour. His best pitch has been said to be his curve ball, which is strong at 71-73 mph. Along with his curve ball, he also throws an 81 mph changeup.
Residents of Carbon County will still have the chance to see Grundy on the mound before he moves on to the major league. CSI is a part of the Scenic West Athletic Conference, the same conference as the College of Eastern Utah, and plays against CEU a few times during the season.
