Letter to the Editor: Looks for impeachement

The initial inattention paid to the so-called “Downing Street memo” by the American media is finally fading, thanks to grass-roots activism of outraged citizens and truly independent journalists.
Mainstream press and members of the U.S. Congress are not taking notice of the Downing Street memo that was leaked through the Times of London on the eve of that country’s spring 2005 elections.
For those still out of the loop, this highly confidential memo details a meeting in which British and American intelligence officials conferred and connived the run up and rationale for the latest western invasion of Iraq. Among a number of things, the Downing Street memo officially documents that President George W. Bush had intended to topple Iraq President Saddam Hussein as early as the summer of 2002.
Remember those elusive weapons of mass destruction? They turned out to be long horn cow pies gussied up to look like steak dinner. As many suspected all along, the administration drew their conclusion first (topple Saddam), with the phony justification to follow (the tough to find, non-existent WMDs). The memo fully acknowledges that an ex post facto reason for war was drummed up while no real danger to America or Britain was actually found by Bush, Blair and their respective associates.
Eighty-nine courageous and rightly outraged members of Congress undersigned a letter written by Rep. Conyers of Michigan to the President, demanding an explanation about the Downing Street memo, the content of which has not been refuted by British or American officialdom. The Bush administration’s flip dismissal of the Conyers letter was not surprising. The Bush men can continue to lie, but they can’t hide. Dishonest war information, refried U.S. Intelligence data and outright propaganda, in the service of the now much reviled “you are with us or against us” Bush foreign policy has worn thin, even for some of the mainstream media’s talking heads and glossy eyed scribblers. Fortunately, many skeptical citizens never bought in to this dreamy war mongering vision. Many others are now waking from the reverie.
It is now clear that President Bush has not told the truth to the American people, and thus violated his oath of office in one of the most unconscionable ways imaginable. Bush and his handlers provided a fallacious justification for mobilizing the military for the purpose of a war that they deceived Congress into believing was necessary. And thousands of people, American, Iraqis, and others, have died as a consequence, with no a light at the end of the tunnel in sight.
It is time the American people hold their president accountable for his ways. And why not an impeachment?
After all, President Clinton was impeached for lying to Congress about something far more mundane (a sexual affair). Doesn’t that all seam quaint in comparison to the current president’s “foreign affairs”?
Despite the Republican Party control of all branches of our American government, and its bullying influence over the fourth estate as well, more and more people, party affiliations aside, now see the need to rise up and challenge the powers that be in order to battle through constitutional crisis created by the current administration.
It is time for Americans of conscience to write to their congressional delegation and demand that impeachment proceedings for the president begin.
