Carbon volleyball defeated the Juab Wasps 3-2 on Tuesday night at home.
Coming into the game the Dinos and Wasps were tied for third place in the Region 14 standings behind Union and Delta.
The Dinos came out rolling in the first two sets, winning the first set 25-18 and the second set 25-17.
“We had a good end to our last game and we used that momentum to keep us going in the beginning of this game,” said Carbon junior Kylee Blackburn.
Carbon’s defense was thriving in the first two sets and didn’t allow Juab easy points.
“Our defense was impeccable and we didn’t let anything to touch the ground. Its was deflating for the Juab team and that brought more fire to our team,” said Carbon Head Coach Teresa Mower.
In the beginning of the third set it looked like Carbon would wrap the game up with a third set win by leading the set 7-4.
Juab wouldn’t quit in the third set and would lead the Dinos 23-20 before the set would go back and forth until the Wasps pulled a 28-26 win to keep the game alive.
“We missed a couple of critical serves and I told my girls that we were playing not to lose instead of playing to win. I know its a small thing but it ends up being a major thing,” said Mower.
Carbon would regain some momentum in the fourth set and stay in control for the first part of the set.
The Dinos held a 17-9 lead until Juab would stay alive with an impressive 14-3 run to take the lead.
Juab would go on to force the fifth set with a 25-21 fourth set victory.
“They go to our weak spots and get more momentum and they really got in our heads,” said Blackburn.
In the final set, the Dinos would open with 10-4 start before letting the Wasps get back in the game and cut the lead to 12-8.
However the Dinos would do just enough in the fifth set to get the 15-11 set win.
“I am just so proud of our girls, they could have quit more than once but they are all heart. It just goes to show that they are working their butts off since day one and its finally paying off,” said Mower.
Leading the Dinos in kills on Tuesday was senior Sami Scoggins who finished the game with 12 kills.
“She crushed the ball tonight, she absolutely crushed it. Sami really played her guts out today and was hitting the ball hard,” said Mower.
Senior McKenna Leonard was second on the team in kills with 10. Junior Gracie Salas finished the night leading the team in aces with five while adding six kills.
The win on Tuesday moves Carbon to sole possession of third place in the region standings with a 6-3 record.
Currently the Dinos are on a three-game winning streak with seven games left on the schedule.
Up next for Carbon is a road game at American Leadership Academy on Thursday in Spanish Fork.
