This letter is in response to your opinion piece suggesting that voters should ignore recommendations from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints regarding Prop 2.
Of course, I do not dispute that there are medicinal benefits to cannabis. I also find it ridiculous that so many of our citizens spend years in jail just for possession of small amounts of marijuana.
But as for this proposition, what I do not like is the way it is written. (Yes, I read it.) Imagine a doctor prescribing something that allows the patient to take what amount they want when they want. I think we would all agree that such a scenario would be irresponsible. Without dosage control, and with no way to know concentrations, I don’t think this proposition is the right way to go.
I appreciate your experiences in Oregon, and I agree that with the right controls and a standardized, pharmacological approach, this would be a great benefit to many.
However, from a world view, if I have to trust the opinion of a journalist or the opinion of a world-renowned heart surgeon, I think I’ll take my chances with the latter.
