Utah State Eastern men’s soccer defeated the Western Wyoming Mustangs 5-0 Wednesday in Rock Springs.
With the win the Eagles open up the season 1-0 and get revenge for last year’s 4-3 loss at home.
“Last year we had a bad start and ended up losing to them at our home field. We did not want the same thing to happen again this year and all of us came to play,” said USU Eastern sophomore Frank DeBry.
The Eagles didn’t waste any time in the first half, scoring a quick goal at the six-minute mark.
After a lengthy rain delay, USU eastern would add one more goal before halftime to be up 2-0 on the Mustangs.
On defense the Eagles shutout the Mustangs led by freshman keeper Israel Davila Aleman, who finished the game with two saves in his first career start.
“He did very good job today and kept us a clean sheet,” said DeBry.
The Eagles would tally three more goals in the second half including two in the span of six minutes.
DeBry led the Eagles in goals with two off of three shot attempts.
Sophomore Jojea Kwizera and freshmen Blake Howden and Dallen Whicker each had a goal against Western Wyoming.
DeBry said keeping the ball on the Mustangs’ side of the field was key to the successful scoring.
“We kept the ball on their side of the field during most of the game and we did our job to finish,” said DeBry.
USU Eastern Head Coach Ammon Bennett said it was great to start the season off with a road victory and was impressed with his team’s performance.
“There was good play overall. Good performance but sometimes a little slow for us and we need to improve some things like decision making but it was a good victory on the road,” said Ammon Bennett.
The Eagles will have almost a week to prepare for two games next weekend at home.
They will play Sheridan College at 6 p.m. on Friday and Trinidad State College on Saturday at 6 p.m.
