Melba Donaldson Erkkila

SCOFIELD-Our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and longtime friend, Melba Dorine Donaldson Erkkila, 98, passed peacefully in her sleep at her daughter’s home while surrounded by her loving family on Monday, May 21, 2018.
She was born January 22, 1920 in Winter Quarters, Utah to Sarah Ann Street and William Miller Donaldson.  She waited for Roland Erkkila while he served his country during World War II in the South Pacific.  They married July 3, 1946 in the Manti Temple.  As a young woman, she worked in the Donaldson General Store in Scofield, Utah, which was owned by her father. She taught school while waiting for her sweetheart to return from the war. Once married she became a full-time homemaker to their three children, Linda Dorine (Robert) Pero, William John Erkkila, and Mike (Kim) Erkkila.  Later on, she loved working as a cashier at the University of Utah College Bookstore.
The long illness and passing of her son, Bill and her little brother, Billy affected her deeply.  She found great joy in her 8 grandchildren, Jeremy (Danielle) Pero, Jamie (Justin) Parker, Jeff (Melissa) Pero, Jordan Pero, Tod Erkkila, Brad (Jennifer) Erkkila, James (Kami) Erkkila, and Jennifer (Aaron) Call.  As the years passed it appeared as though Grandma waited with anticipation for the birth of each of her 16 great grandchildren.
People will remember Melba for her feisty spirit, will to live, ready smile, deep religious convictions, and unbound devotion to chocolate.
Melba was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Bernice; little brother, Billy; son, Bill; and husband, Roland.
We wish to thank the staff of Rocky Mountain Hospice for their support and care during her final days.
There will be a viewing with the family at Mitchell Funeral Home (233 East Main Street) In Price Wednesday evening from 6-8 pm.  Funeral services will be held at the Scofield LDS Branch on Thursday May 24, 2018 at 3pm where the family will receive friends one hour prior to services. Interment at Scofield Cemetery.  Arrangements entrusted to Mitchell Funeral Home where friends are always welcome daily and may share memories of Melba online at www.mitchellfuneralhome.net
