Carbon Softball defeated the Grand County Red Devils 9-4 in the 3A State Playoffs on Friday in Spanish Fork.
Coming off a quarterfinal lost to the Union Cougars, the Dinos went right back to work 20 minutes later with a game against Grand in the loser’s bracket.
The Dinos opened the first inning by adding two runs off a Grand error. They also loaded the bases but were unable to capitalize with additional runs.
Grand would bounce back in the top of the second with an RBI single off of Carbon pitcher Dekota Kraushaar.
In the next inning Grand would tie the game at 2-2 after a single up the middle by Cortney Noyes.
Both teams had plenty of opportunities to jump out to a lead in the game but couldn’t get runs to cross home plate. Carbon and Grand combined to leave 13 runners left on base.
Grand would break the tie in the top of the sixth with a Tyra Robertson two-run home run with two outs to go up 4-2.
Carbon’s Cali Fossat would cut that lead to 4-3 with a solo home run off the first pitch of the bottom half of the sixth inning.
The Dino offense would continue to put runs on the Red Devils in the sixth inning. The Dinos would go on to score seven runs that inning including a two-run home run by McKenna Pendergrass.
Moosman in the circle would close out the Red Devils in the seventh inning and the Dinos would prevail in the loser’s bracket.
Before the last out, Grand protested some calls that the umpires made in the previous innings. The protest took nearly 45 minutes and prolonged the start times of the next round.
Carbon will now play the Manti Templars in the next round of the 3A State Playoffs.
If Carbon wins against Manti, they will face the loser of Union and Grantsville at 10 a.m.
