Laurel Johansen of Emery County was recognized Friday as Southeastern Utah’s 2018 Woman of the Year. She received the honor at USU Eastern’s 39th Annual Women’s Conference.
Johansen was commended for her years of service to her community, church and family. Her contributions included 33 years as a nurse with the Emery County Public Health Department, years as a PTA president and 20 years as School Board President. She also was active in volunteer work such as community plays, where she designed and made costumes, choreographed musical numbers, co-directed and sometimes acted the lead role.
She retired from nursing and other pursuits three years ago when her husband was diagnosed with AML Leukemia. “She is an example of motherhood, womanhood and sainthood and her contributions to her community have been innumerable,” the letter of recommendation for the award stated.
