Carbon baseball defeated the Salem Hills Skyhawks 4-3 in eight innings Tuesday in Helper.
The Dinos picked up the big win over 4A power Salem Hills after losing 9-0 to Provo on the road on Monday.
“I am happy with our effort today, all the way around. We can always swing the bats better, we can always pitch better and we can always play defense better but everything was pretty good today,” aid Carbon Head Coach Jeff Cisneros.
Carbon got up 2-0 in the first inning when Nate Olson drove home Ty Anderson and a Collin Lewis ground out brought Cody Lowe across home for a score.
Zac Bradley got the start on the mound and pitched six innings for the Dinos with only giving up three hits.
In the second inning, the Dinos made two critical errors in the infield to help the Skyhawks put two runs on the board.
“Errors always bite us in the butt, yeah we made a couple today. Getting back on our field and playing, we played on a Provo field yesterday it was really slow on the infield, we get back out here and it was really fast and some balls got on us quicker,” said Cisneros
Anderson crossed home plate again for the Dinos in the bottom of the third after a ball got passed Salem Hills’ catcher.
Salem Hills tied things up in the top of the fourth inning when the Dinos allowed a run to score.
In the top of the seventh inning after pitching two straight scoreless innings, Bradley was replaced on the mound by Jadon Robertson.
Robertson would go on to pitch in the eighth inning and got the win for the Dinos.
For Robertson, it was his first action from on the mound since the first game of the season and he said after the game he was prepared to help the Dinos close the game.
“I just went in more relaxed, my coaches have been telling me to go in more relaxed. That is what I am supposed to do, go in and close it so I was really relaxed,” said Robertson.
With a Lowe and Jaxon Leonard on base in the bottom of the eighth with no outs, the Dinos used a bunt by Collin Lewis to advance the runners to second and third.
“It didn’t work the inning before, I don’t bunt the ball a lot and we do work on it. It got us in a scoring position, Collin did a good job to get the bunt down,” said Cisneros.
With one out, the Skyhawks intentionally walked Jadon Robertson to put Anthony Jones at the plate with bases loaded.
Jones would get walked as well to move the batters over and bring Lowe in to touch home for the game winning run.
The Dinos will have another quick turnaround on Wednesday playing rival Emery at 3 p.m. in Helper.
“Obviously, Emery is a rival and has been forever. It’s always good to get the two schools together not matter what sport it is. It will be a good ball game but for us it’s about moving forward and getting better and taking care of business,” said Cisneros.
Last season the Dinos lost to Emery 5-2 on the road. The last time Carbon defeated Emery was at home in 2016 by a score of 12-8.
