The Carbon boys’ basketball team defeated the Maeser Prep Lions 65-56 at home last Wednesday night.
Carbon’s win snapped a five-game losing streak and netted them their first home win of 2018.
“It was a win that I knew coming into the game that we should win. We did what it took to get the W,” said Carbon Head Coach Kyle Willson.
The Dinos struggled getting things going in the first quarter, while the Lions couldn’t miss, especially from three- point territory. Carbon trailed 22-17 at the end of the first quarter.
Coming out of the quarter break, junior forward Collin Lewis made a three pointer to help the Dinos get back in the game.
“I love when Lew gets going, we need him to score and we need more than one person in double-digits scoring each night,” Carbon guard Jordan Vasquez said.
With less than a minute to play in the half, Vasquez drilled a three to cut the Maeser Prep lead to two.
After a defensive stop, the Dinos had the ball with time ticking down in the half and found Vasquez in the corner. He made a fade away three as time expired to give them a 31-30 halftime lead.
Vasquez’s hot shooting continued in the third quarter when he made two three pointers early in the period.
Along with Vasquez, junior forward Derek Hillam was almost unstoppable in the third quarter, scoring 8 points. They both helped Carbon outscore the Lions 22-10 in the period.
Maeser Prep did manage to make a comeback in the fourth quarter by starting the period on a 9-0 run.
“They did shoot the ball well, but in the second half we turned it up on defense and made sure they didn’t score as much as they did in the first half,” said Vasquez.
Vasquez shot five of six at the free throw line down the stretch to help preserve the victory over Maeser Prep. He would go on to be the Dinos’ leading scorer with 19 points.
Wednesday night’s game against Region 14 leader Union is scheduled for 7 p.m.
