If you’re thinking about attempting to get a resident big game permit in another state, think again.
Larry Altimus posed as a Utah resident, then killed a Desert Bighorn Sheep. He has been sentenced to pay $30,750 in restitution and fines. He will not be able to hunt in 47 states for the next 10 years as part of an agreement with the Interstate Wildlife Violators Compact.
Altimus rented a house in Kanab in 2013, apparently as a guise to appear to be a Utah resident.
According to Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) officials Altimus never really lived in the house he rented. He used the address of the house to apply for the permit. He was one of 10 lucky people to draw a resident bighorn sheep permit for 2014.
Altimus actually lives in Pearce, AZ, where he works as a hunting guide. Although he can’t hunt, he is not precluded from performing his guide services.
Wildlife officials say Altimus was found guilty in July 2017. They say he illegally obtained a Utah resident hunting permit and then used that permit to kill the ram in southwestern Utah.
WR investigators seized the head and horns of the illegally taken ram.
