The scientists and inventors of tomorrow displayed their genius at Creekview Elementary’s annual science fair on Thursday.
More than 120 students in the second through fifth grades completed projects in a range of categories.
Some might question the ability of elementary students to use the scientific process, but teachers build up to the event with instruction focused on how to perform a proper scientific experiment.
“It gives kids a chance to try something they’re interested in. This year, several of the judges expressed amazement at how good the kids’ projects were,” said Sylvia Swasey, a second grade teacher.
She hopes the experience will inspire kids to continue competing in science fairs as they move to middle and high school.
Lisa Johnson, a third grade teacher, said the skills kids learn from participating can have a tremendous impact on their educations.
“Science fair gets students to think at a completely different level. They learn critical thinking and problem solving,” she said.
Community members, high school students and professionals volunteered to judge the event. “We are very grateful for their support and help,” Swasey added.
