The Carbon Lady Dinos defeated the Providence Hall Patriots 66-25 Thursday night to remain undefeated at home.
Coming off a win against a tough Juab team on Jan. 23, the Lady Dinos began slow in the first quarter.
“We didn’t come out as ready as we should have, we kind of overlooked them because we beat them last time,” said senior forward Kelsey Sorenson.
Carbon led the Patriots 11-5 at the end of the first quarter, but in the beginning of the second quarter the Patriots came back and were only down one.
With 5:34 left in the first half, Carbon finally broke out with a made three by sophomore guard Abbie Saccomanno.
That three began a 16-5 run by Carbon to finish the first half. Sophomore guard Jordan Bianco scored two threes during that run after being scoreless in the first quarter.
After halftime, the Lady Dinos bounced back from a rough start by shutting down the Patriots in the second half, only allowing them to score 9 points.
Saccomanno finished the night as Carbon’s leading scorer with 14 points, including 10 points in the second half.
“It is nothing new. Abbie is always a hard worker and today it showed more,” said Sorenson.
Despite foul trouble, junior forward Jodi Noyes was the Lady Dinos’ second leading scorer with 10 points.
Sophomore Diana Morley finished the game with 9 points off the bench for Carbon.
Carbon now has a 13-5 overall record, 7-2 in conference, good enough for second place in Region 14.
After the game, Carbon head coach Ted Bianco said that he is a little bit surprised with his young team’s performance.
“I expected them to play hard. Am I surprised? Maybe a little bit. But after being around these girls for the last three months, the surprise is no longer there,” said Bianco.
The next home game for Carbon will be Senior Night, Feb. 6, a showdown with Region 14 leader Union, which has an undefeated conference record.
