Carbon's Kelsey Sorenson drives on a Juab defender during the 3rd quarter of Tuesday's Win over the Wasps.

The Carbon Lady Dinos defeated the Juab Wasps 50-40 on Tuesday night in Price.

Not only does Carbon extend their home win streak to five games, they also tie Juab for second place in the Region 14 standings.

After the game, Carbon Head Coach Ted Bianco said that he was happy with the way his team responded at home against Juab after previously losing to the Wasps in Nephi last month.

“Our kids stepped up to the plate and I thought we played excellent defense tonight,” said Bianco.

Not only did the Lady Dino defense play well Tuesday night, they almost shut down Juab’s best player and center Hannah Robins to only two points in the first half.

Carbon held Robins to only 10 points in the entire game with six of those points coming from the free throw line.

Leading the way for Carbon was senior Kelsey Sorenson, who finished the night with a team-high 14 points. Sorenson played especially well in the fourth quarter while playing with four fouls to help seal the victory for her team.

Another key stat of the night for Carbon was their free throw shooting. The Lady Dinos shot 22 of 30 from the free throw line on Tuesday.

Sophomores Abby Saccomanno and Jordan Bianco each made all of their free throws they attempted. They combined for 19 of the Lady Dinos points on Tuesday, with 10 of those points from the foul line.

Now that they are tied for second place, Bianco said his team still has to compete and reach their goal of being the top seed in the state tournament.

“It was probably one of our best games of the season so I am really excited for our girls, It was a huge win for us but every game of we play will be huge the rest of the season,” said Bianco.

Bianco said his team will have to quickly move on from Tuesday night’s win because they have a short turnaround before their next home game against Providence Hall on Thursday night.

“It’s another huge game for us, we got to be prepared for their press and half-court trap. We got to put this game behind us in practice tomorrow and get ready for the next game, we can’t live off our laurels and we got to be ready to go,” said Bianco.

Carbon’s record now moves to 12-5 overall and 6-2 in Region 14, they are two games behind first place and undefeated Union.

The Lady Dinos will host Union in two week on Senior night at home.

Thursday’s tipoff against Providence Hall is scheduled for 7 p.m., a team they defeated last month by 35 points.
