The Carbon Lady Dinos defeated the Maeser Prep Lions 54-13 on Thursday night in their first game of 2018.
Carbon was simply dominating and overwhelmed the Lions from the get go to capture their third region win of the season.
Maeser Prep did not score a basket in the first half and trailed 32-0 at halftime to the Lady Dinos.
Senior forward Kelsey Sorenson, the team’s leading scorer, came off the bench toward the end of the first quarter and went off for 8 points immediately.
Part of the reason she scored so much in the first quarter was because of her work in the paint and drawing fouls. She went to the foul line six times and made all six shots.
“She is a great team player and I thought she did a fantastic job as normal,” said Carbon Head Coach Ted Bianco.
Sorenson finished the game with a team-high 16 points including 8 of 9 from the free throw line.
“I knew I wasn’t going to get a lot of playing time because we were going to give the younger girls some playing time so I was just ready to come out and play with the minutes I have and play my hardest,” said Sorenson.
The Lions finally got on the board in the third quarter with four minutes to play in the third quarter after a three pointer was made by Alexis Hunter.
After finally breaking through with a made basket the Carbon High students and fans cheered loudly to applaud the Lions. That type of sportsmanship shown by the home crowd made Coach Bianco proud of the place he coaches.
“I am proud of our kids for that, you don’t always see that. We have a lot of good kids at this school and it’s fun to watch our kids put their interests aside and cheer for someone else in that moment in time,” said Bianco.
With the lead, very well in hand throughout most of the game, Bianco allowed most of his bench and younger players to receive playing time against an overmatched Maeser Prep squad.
The Lady Dinos only had one starter in double figures on Thursday with junior forward Jodi Noyes scoring 10 points.
Carbon now has a 3-1 Region 14 record and will play a crucial game on the road against a very tough Union team on Tuesday night.
“To get ready for that game we got to get ready to face a very aggressive man to man defense and get ready for a physical game,” said Coach Bianco.
Tip off against Union is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. in Roosevelt.
