A thirteen year old girl was killed and a dozen others were injured when the bus they were riding in left I-70 and crashed on Dec. 31. Only one passenger was uninjured in the accident. The bus was traveling westbound en route to Las Vegas, Nevada. It left the highway near mile marker 113 and crashed into a ravine about 200 feet from the interstate.
The Utah Highway Patrol identified the fatal victim as Summer Pinzon of Azusa, California. She was traveling with her mother, who was transported by air to a hospital in Murray in serious condition. The bus driver and another passenger were also airlifted to Salt Lake area hospitals. The remaining passengers were transported by ground ambulance to hospitals in Price, Richfield and Provo.
The Highway Patrol said the cause of the crash is under investigation, but a passenger reported a possible medical issue with the driver. Victims were being interviewed at the various hospitals and the National Transportation Safety Board has been notified.
