Carbon County officials have a new emergency notification system, and are encouraging citizens to sign up to receive notices in the event of an emergency. The information is contained in a recent direct mailer and on the sheriff’s office facebook page, but many residents who subscribed to the old Code Red system are not aware that they need to sign up again.
Emergency Management Director Justin Needles said the old Code Red system involved an agreement with Grand and San Juan Counties, but San Juan County opted out. As Carbon County renegotiated, he said a better system was found. But Code Red refused to give up the data so people need to sign up again.
Needles said residents can now receive public safety alerts and community notifications through a system powered by “AlertSense.” He said, “It’s a better product, a better system, and a little cheaper.” The new system features better maps and better notification in case of severe weather, flooding, fire, hazardous materials contamination, civil danger, evacuation and missing persons.
The system can also page emergency responders in the event public safety dispatch isn’t available and may be used to activate the emergency action notification system on radio and TV.

Needles said, “I would like to encourage people to sign up to be informed.” He said the system is secure with no unauthorized access to the data.
