Carbon boys basketball lost their 2017-2018 home opener 58-40 to the Tooele Buffaloes last Tuesday night.
The Dinos held their own against the upper level Buffaloes, who are in the 4A classification, until junior forward Derek Hillam got in foul trouble.
According to Carbon head coach Kyle Willson, sitting Hillam didn’t help his team’s situation.
“It didn’t help the situation and we were trying so hard to compete that we made mistakes that we normally don’t make,” said Willson.
In the absence of Hillam in the post, senior Jordan Vasquez kept the Dinos close scoring two 3 pointers in the first half.
Tooele continued to attack the paint in the first half and took a 10-point lead into halftime.
In the third quarter the Buffaloes bench wore down the Dinos. Tooele’s Jeno Bins scored 10 points off the bench on Tuesday to be his team’s second leading scorer.
A bright spot for the Dinos was the minutes off the bench put in by junior Ty Anderson says Willson.
“Ty Anderson came off the bench, and I thought he gave me fantastic energy and some good things,” said Willson.
The Buffaloes built up a double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter and fended off the Dinos to spoil Carbon’s home opener.
Willson said that although his team lost at home, he was happy with his team’s effort against Tooele.
“They worked their tails off, just a few mistakes that we need to get better at and things that I can do in practice to put my guys in a better situation come game time,” said Willson.
Leading the Buffaloes in scoring with 20 points, was senior guard Mitchell Bunn.
Vasquez finished the game as Carbon’s leading scorer with 13 points.
Junior forward Collin Lewis scored 7 points off the bench.
Up next for the Dinos is another non-conference matchup against Palisade, Colorado on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
