A bear cub captured over the weekend near Wellington is now fattening up for winter at temporary lodgings in Cache County. Division of Wildlife Resources biologists trapped the young male bear after receiving reports that he was running loose near town, according to DWR Southeastern Region spokesman Morgan Jacobsen.
The cub is not an infant, but appears to be about two years old, Jacobsen said.
The rehab facility is a partnership between DWR and Utah State University. Jacobsen said the cub could triple his weight by the time of his expected release in December. The winter release date will be at a time when just about all other bears are already hibernating. This will reduce the risk of predation. The cub should have adequate fat reserves to find his own den and settle in for his own hibernation.
