Helper sweeps Price in doubleheader

Both teams preparing for Southern Utah State American Legion Tournament
The Helper Merchants American Legion baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against Price City on Tuesday, defeating the Raptors 16-0 and 11-1.
In the first game, the Merchants got out to a quick lead in the first inning, with Cody Lowe hitting a two-run home run. After a scoreless second inning, the Merchants broke open the game in the third inning, scoring eight runs, with the help of two-RBI doubles by Jadon Robertson and Nate Olson. Tiger Thayn also hit an RBI double in the inning.
The fourth was another high scoring inning, with six runs crossing the plate for Helper. RBI triples by Wyatt Wilson and Jaxon Leonard highlighted the inning. After a scoreless top of the fifth inning, the game ended in Helper’s favor.
Zac Bradley started the game for Helper and threw 2.2 shutout innings with five strikeouts. Nate Olson pitched 1.2 innings with one strikeout and Leonard pitched .2 innings with one strikeout.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Price mustered a run in the first inning on an RBI-double. However, Helper quickly took a large lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring eight runs. One run in the third inning, and two in the fifth ended the game once again in Helper’s favor.
Both teams will now prepare to play in the 2017 Southern Utah State American Legion Tournament, which will be hosted in Helper beginning on Thursday. Price, the seventh seed, will play against St. George, the second seed, at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Helper, the third seed, will play against South Sevier, the sixth seed, at 8 p.m. on Thursday. The top four seeds from the Southern Division will advance to the Utah State American Legion Tournament at Gates Field in Kearns.
