Carbon School District awards outstanding achievers

Carbon School District last week honored its high-achieving students and retiring employees, and awarded individuals who have contributed greatly to education.
On May 8 the Student Awards Banquet was held with sponsorship from the Eastern Utah Community Credit Union. More than 200 awards were handed out to students who have excelled in academics, technical fields and at regional and state competitions in the past school year.
These included Carbon High’s Sterling Scholars, Academic All-State athletes, students who had exceptionally high ACT scores, those involved in Career and Technical Education Pathways, Debate, Drama, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), Future Farmers of America, Quiz Bowl participants, Regional Science Fair Winners, State History Fair Winners, the Cosmetology student of the year and the Regional Spelling Bee winner.
One of the highlights of the evening was the success that the district has had in sending so many students to state in various fields as well as onto national competitions in Debate, FBLA, Quiz Bowl, the National Spelling Bee and the History Fair.
On May 9 the district held the Retirement and Awards Banquet for district personnel and support organizations. The five retirees from the district were Joe Cha (Mont Harmon Middle School), Rosalie Payne (Carbon High), Gaylene Kokal (Castle Valley Center), Terri Tubbs (Carbon High), Carol Chiara (Carbon High), Holly Hall (Wellington Elementary) and Steve May (Lighthouse High School).
This year the Carbon Board of Education also sponsored special presentations of the “Moving Forward Awards.”
Winners included Jacie Pressett (Carbon High) who received the Teaching Excellence Award, Richard Simmons (Wellington Elementary) who was honored with the Nothing Strong as a Heart Award, Tawnie Crowe (Lighthouse High School) who got the It’s Classified Employee Award, Tom Lasslo (Mont Harmon Middle School ) who was given the Extra! Extra! Read All About It Award, the Creekview Elementary Community Council which was given the School Community Council Award and Don Garrett (Castle Valley Center) who Superintendent Steve Carlsen awarded the Superman Award.
