A small group of people staged a peaceful protest near the Seventh District Court building Monday morning. The group was protesting the sentence handed down by Judge George Harmond to 44-year old Bart Sorenson on 16 felony charges of forcible sexual abuse going back to 2012.
Upon his arrival for the day’s court proceedings, Judge Harmond was escorted into the building by Sheriff Jeff Wood and Sgt. Victor Turner.
Spokesperson for the protesters Kris Richards of Green River said, “We’re protesting Bart Sorensen and his light sentence. This is important enough to us to come up and hopefully, have a voice.” She added, “We experienced a similar situation in the courts last year in Emery County.”
Sorenson was sentenced last week to one to 15 years in prison on each count. The prison terms were suspended and he was placed on probation for 36 months. He was ordered to serve nine months in jail and complete sex offender treatment. He must not have any weapons and must be employed once released from jail. He may not obtain any hunting or fishing license. Further, Sorenson cannot have any contact with children under the age of 18, including his own children except under certain circumstances, and cannot coach or attend any sports related activities for children under 18.
