Gary “Duke” Jelsma | 1945 – 2017

Gary “Duke” Jelsma, 71, passed away March 6, 2017 in West Jordan, Utah. He was born March 14, 1945 in Melbita, Nebraska to Robert Clifford Heassler and Betty Jean Halligan. Gary was raised by his mother Betty and his stepfather Leon Jelsma. In lieu of a funeral, a memorial will be held 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at the home of Deborah Jelsma, at 8773 Royal Crest Drive in West Jordan on what would have been his 72nd birthday.
Gary married his soulmate and best friend, Deborah Lynne Smith on April 15, 1972 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were happily married for over 44 years. Gary was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He worked as a barber for many years and spent his spare time making friends wherever he went. He loved going out for coffee, drawing, and spending time with his family and dogs. Gary was generous and had a big heart, and always tried to do things for those less fortunate than himself.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, Robert Clifford Heassler; mother, Betty Jean Jelsma; stepfather, Leon Jelsma; as well as his daughters, Tracy, Leslie and Amanda; and granddaughter Courtney.
He is survived by his loving wife, Deborah Jelsma; his children, Kimberley, Travis, David (Tiffany), Chelsie, Chari (Luis), as well as 13 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA in Gary’s name due to his love for all animals.
