Dinos finish 2-2 in weekend tournament

By Sun Advocate

The Carbon High School baseball team ended the weekend at the Pizza Hut Classic 2-2, falling to Dixie High School on Thursday, defeating Mountain Crest and Payson high schools on Friday, then finishing the weekend with a loss against Cedar City High School on Saturday.
The tournament started out a bit rocky for the Dinos, as they were no-hit by Dixie in an 8-0 loss. Dixie scored two runs in the second, third and fourth innings, then one in both the fifth and sixth to earn the win. Junior Zac Bradley pitched three innings for the Dinos, and while he gave up four runs, two earned, he also struck out five batters and allowed no walks.
Friday proved a better day for Carbon, as they earned victories in both back-and-forth games they played. Carbon defeated Mountain Crest to start the day 13-12. Mountain Crest got out to an early four-run lead after two innings, but in the bottom of the second, the Dinos scored six runs to take the lead. Carbon held on to the two- run lead at the end of the third, after both teams scored four runs. The Dinos scored a run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, and despite three in the sixth and one in the seventh by Mountain Crest, Carbon came out victorious.
Quite opposite to the day before, the Dinos tallied 11 hits, with seniors Jayden Flemmett, Cody Lowe and Chase Morgan each going 2-for-4. Lowe also tallied a triple and two RBI. Sophomore Ty Anderson went 1-3 with a double and two RBI.
Carbon went on another hitting spree in the third game of the tournament, defeating Payson 14-13 and tallying 11 hits. Carbon pulled off the victory by scoring four runs in the seventh and final inning, after trailing 11-10. Despite two runs from Payson in the bottom of the seventh, the Dinos took the win.
Lowe went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in the game, and senior Gavin Robinett went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Lowe also pitched three innings, allowing one earned run and striking out one.
The Dinos hit a skid in the final game of the tournament, falling to Cedar City 10-0, and only managing one hit.
The Dinos are now 2-3 overall early this season. Carbon will travel to play rival Emery High School on March 21, with the Varsity game slated for 3 p.m.
