Dinos tally two wins against North Sanpete

By Sierra Trujillo

After a week full of delays and postponed games due to rain, and even a little sleet and snow, the Carbon High School baseball team played its three-game series against North Sanpete High School with a doubleheader on the road on Wednesday and a home game on Saturday. The Dinos won two out of three of the games, defeating the Hawks handily in the games in which they were victorious.
The Dinos won the first game of the series on Wednesday 17-0, with each player in the line-up tallying at least one hit. Carbon jumped out to an early lead, scoring six runs in the first inning. Adding two in the third, two in the fourth and seven in the fifth, the Dinos never looked back.
Both Trey Richardson and Taylon Abeyta went 3-4 with two RBI and a double each in the game.
Cole Fossat pitched the complete five innings for the Dinos, tallying four strikeouts and allowing no runs and only four hits and one walk.
The Dinos hit a rough spot in the second game of the series, falling to North Sanpete 7-6. The Dinos fell behind 5-0 after two innings, but scored three runs in the third and three in the fourth to take a one-run lead. After holding the Hawks scoreless through the fourth, fifth and sixth, the Dinos allowed two runs in the bottom of the seventh, and North Sanpete took the walk-off win.
“We just didn’t focus in the second game and hit like we should have down there,” said head coach Jeff Cisneros. “Just didn’t hit in the second game like we did the first game. Didn’t focus up and hit the way we should have. It was the same pitching but that’s why you play the game. You have to focus the same way and we just didn’t and just didn’t hit the ball in the second game. We didn’t play bad defense, we only made one error in two games so our defense was good, we just didn’t hit.”
The Dinos came home to play the final game against the Hawks on Saturday and finished the series with an 11-3 win. Anthony Maclean started the game on the mound for the Dinos and pitched six innings with three earned runs, seven strikeouts and no walks.
After allowing one run in the top of the first inning, the Dinos scored four of their own to take the lead. With three in the third, two in the fourth and two in the fifth, the Dinos continued to extend their lead. The Dinos allowed two more runs to cross the plate in the third inning, but the Hawks were never able to gain enough momentum to mount a comeback.
The Dinos tallied 14 hits in the game, with Jayden Flemett going 3-4 with two RBI and a double and Mitch Olson going 2-4 with a triple and one RBI.
“We hit the ball better today (Saturday), but we still left some guys on base we shouldn’t have, so we still could have done a better job hitting today too,” said Cisneros.
The Dinos are now 8-10 overall and 4-5 in Region 12 play. With the final games of the regular season being played this week, the Dinos will look to sweep Juab High School in the three-game series in order to take sole possession of second place in Region 12. The Dinos will play a doubleheader at home on Tuesday beginning at 3 p.m. and then will travel to Juab on Friday for the final game of the series.
“We’re going to have to do a better job with Juab, they’re a better team,” said Cisneros. “But it’s good we’ve got the two games at home with them on Tuesday and we’ll just go from there. We need to hit and our pitching needs to be better with them, they’re a better hitting team so we just work on everything… a little bit of everything.”
