Utah’s nonfarm payroll employment for October 2015 grew by an estimated 3.5 percent, adding 47,700 jobs to the economy as compared to October 2014. Utah’s current employment level registers 1,400,800.
October’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained the same as last month at 3.6 percent. Approximately 52,300 Utahns were unemployed in the month and actively seeking work. The national unemployment rate dropped one-tenth of a percentage point from September to 5.0 percent.
“Even with a slight drop in job growth, the state continues to show above average expansion,” reported Carrie Mayne, Chief Economist at the Department of Workforce Services. “Continued growth means continued opportunities for job seekers to find positions with Utah employers.”
Eight of the ten private sector industry groups measured in the establishment survey posted net job increases in October as compared to last year, while the Natural Resources and Mining industry shed 800 positions and Other Services shed 1,200 positions.
The largest private sector employment increases were in Education and Health Services (9,500 jobs); Leisure and Hospitality (9,200 jobs); and Professional and Business Services (8,100 jobs). The fastest employment growth occurred in Information (7.5 percent); Leisure and Hospitality (7.2 percent); and Construction (6.6 percent).
