After a few seasons filled with tough losses and disappointing win-loss records, the Carbon High School boys’ basketball team will follow the lead of its seniors in hopes of reaching the ultimate goal of a Region title in the 2015-16 season.
“A region championship is what our goal is with [this] group and anything less right now would be a little disappointing for us, but that’s what we’re working for,” said Dinos’ head coach Jeff Cisneros.
The Dinos hosted their Blue/ White scrimmage game on Friday, during which Cisneros relied on his six experienced seniors to lead the way for the younger athletes. The seniors played in games throughout the summer and won about 90 percent of them, which shows promise for the upcoming season.
“We haven’t played that many games ever,” said Cisneros. “They played a lot of ball. The more you can get together and play and become familiar with each other, the better we’re going to be, so I think that’s really going to help us.”
During the scrimmage, Cisneros saw many good things from his younger players as well, including very good shooting, although he thinks that they are still catching up to the older players.
“It’s just about trying to get our younger guys caught up because the older guys are just so far ahead, and we want to get those young guys caught up,” said Cisneros. “It’s just about executing what we’re doing and not letting someone else take away from what we want to do. The older guys know our offenses really well so it’s just a matter of executing.”
Seniors Kasey Moynier, Mitch Olson and Cole Fossat were chosen as captains last week by their teammates, and Cisneros hopes they will help lead the Dinos to the success of a Region title on the court.
The Dinos will play their first game of the season at Maple Mountain on Tuesday. Their first home game will be on Dec. 9 against Stanisbury at 7 p.m.
