Youth runs away, hops on train, gets captured at Scofield junction

By Rick Sherman

A 16-year old Lighthouse High School student facing a disciplinary issue fled the school Tuesday and, said Price Police Captain Bill Barnes, “basically ran away.”
The juvenile’s mother called police when he didn’t come home from school and an attempt-to-locate was issued out of concern for his welfare. The youth was spotted in various locations around the USU Eastern Campus before dropping out of sight.
The runaway somehow made his way to Helper, where a witness saw him hopping on a long coal train near Pistol Pete’s Drive In on North Main Street. He was riding between cars about ten cars back from the engine. Police were notified and coordinated plans with the railroad to stop the train and deliver the youth to safety.
The train was stopped at about 6 p.m. near the Scofield turnoff from SR-6, where Utah Highway Patrol Sergeant Joe Vasquez and Price Police Detective Dave Wilkinson took the boy into custody without further incident.
Captain Barnes said the juvenile was taken to detention and will be charged with trespassing. He said it was a potentially dangerous situation and not a good idea.
