For a few days last week, residents of Carbon County saw billows of white smoke rising from the Tavaputs Plateau in the east. It was not a wild fire, but a carefully prescribed burn designed to protect the forest from a potentially devastating fire later. The Utah Division of Forestry ignited about 1,000 acres of state and private land near the Cold Spring Wildlife Management Area that was overloaded with dead and dying timber.
Reducing the fire load encourages new growth and prevents a buildup of dry fuel, reducing the severity of future fires.
