Troop 555 Day in Helper

By Sun Advocate

Forty-two years ago, the members of Girl Scout Troop 555 decided to do something about a vacant lot that they thought was an eyesore on Helper Main Street between City Hall and the Post Office. They thought building a park would be a good idea. So they rounded up permission, support, advice and funds, grabbed shovels and went to work. Cleared debris, fertilized with manure, planted grass and trees and helped install a sprinklier system. Then they dedicated it as the Senior Citizens Park. The park is today a centerpiece of Main Street, enjoyed day-to-day and as a venue for such events as the Arts & Music Festival. On Saturday, the members gathered from far and wide to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the completion. E Clampus Vitus donated historic plaques to honor the scouts.
