The Carbon girl’s softball team needed to win both ends of the doubleheader against Delta to sew a play-off spot. It didn’t happen. They lost the first game 1-3, but recovered to take the second game by the score of 4-3. But they still have a shot at fourth place finish. The difference is it is no longer in their hands. Delta meets up with Juan Diego for a pair and if they drop them both, Carbon has their spot. Even if the Rabbits split, Carbon will still probably make the first round.
The Dinos had Delta on the ropes in the first inning but then let them score a pair after two outs. After that the Dino defense cracked down and played some great ball to keep Delta from doing any more damage. In the fifth, Delta sent another run across for their only other score.
It was the Carbon offense that sputtered. They were only able to manage four hits in the game. The few solid cracks they had were sent directly to the Rabbit defense. The Dinos scored in the seventh after two walks and no one out. But, the Carbon rally fell short and the game slipped away.
The team shook off the loss and came back ready to play. Both teams scored one in the first and it remained tied until the third. Delta pushed two across to take a 3-1 lead. Again the Dino defense went to work and shutout the Rabbits the rest of the game.
Carbon chipped away at the lead with one in the fourth. But the game remained Delta’s until the bottom of the seventh when Whitney Williams came through with an RBI double to send the winning runs across.
Carbon will travel to Castle Dale to take on the powerful Emery Spartans for their final game of the season. A win would really help out the Dinos in the play-off picture, but it is an uphill battle. The Spartans have been playing some great ball all season and Carbon has struggled to find their “A” game when they have faced them.
Game time is at 3:30 p.m. down in Emery.
