After a slow start this season, the Carbon Dino baseball team has gotten on a roll just in time for region play. Two more wins was just what the doctor ordered as Carbon downed North Sanpete 4-3 and 14-7 in their Wednesday doubleheader. But the streak didn’t hold as Delta stopped the Dinos on Friday with an 11-9 loss.
On Wednesday, Carbon held off a first inning threat by the Hawks to start things off. They came back to score a run to take the early lead. In the third North Sanpete put three across and were feeling pretty good about things. The next few innings, neither team could score.
The Dinos tied it in the sixth. Lance Deeter had the winning hit that sent the final run across for Carbon in the seventh. Brandon Branch scorched a triple in the game for one of Carbon’s five hits. Dylan Olsen was the pitcher of record.
Game two had the Hawks score first in the second with a run. The Dinos answered with three. North Sanpete added one and Carbon again answered with two. The Dinos put up another pair in the fourth and a run in the fifth to sit on a 6-2 lead.
But the Hawks busted out of their offensive slump and tagged Carbon for five to take the lead in the sixth. Then it was the Dinos turn to put on an offensive show and they pushed six across to take the lead with a vengeance.
Anthony Kelley had a double in the game. Dayton Martindale and Beau Rich each smashed a triple. Hot hitting Ron Herrera sent one over the fence as part of Carbon’s nine hits on the afternoon. Josh Denison was the winning pitcher of record.
On Friday the Dinos again came out in the first to take an early 3-1 lead. Delta came back in the second to tie it up. Carbon starting pitcher Greg Barker had a slow start , but settled down to keep the game close.
He left in the third as TJ Cartwright took the mound. But the Rabbits had their bats going and managed a run or more in every inning but the fifth. Carbon also kept their offense on track and almost kept pace, trailing by a run until the top of the sixth. Delta took a five run lead, posting four runs in their half of the inning.

But Carbon was not ready to roll over just yet. They scored three and had runners on the pads when their rally fell just short.
“Thats what I like about this team,” commented Coach Moynier. “It doesn’t matter if we are behind by 10 or 2, they just keep fighting. We were down by five runs in the sixth and they didn’t give up.”
Anthony Kelley, Matt Salas and Tyler Bean each had an extra base hit for Carbon. Beau Rich had a three bagger as the Dino offense just kept hitting.
The next region game is up north at Juan Diego on Friday April 11th. The team will be back at home April 22 for a pair against Juan Diego after a trip to Emery for two on April 15th.
“Juan Diego has been beating up on good Utah teams as well as playing in a National tournament, so we have our work cut out for us,” remarked Moynier. “We just need to make fewer mistakes, keep hitting and get a few more strike outs and we will be right in it.”
