For over 11 years the Family Support and Children’s Justice Center has been committed to the prevention and treatment of child abuse. We accomplish this in many ways.
We assist families in times of crisis and provide respite to families needing a break. We offer free parenting classes to adults and teenagers. The center provides outreach services to families who are struggling to function or, families where the children may be at risk of being abused. The center also assists in the coordination of child abuse investigations by providing the children a safe place to talk about their abusive situation. Once a child is seen at the center for an investigation, then follow up is made to refer the families for counseling, victim advocate services, or medical exams.
The Family Support and Children’s Justice Center is also committed to educating our communities. Why? Because child abuse is a community problem, not just ours, but your problem too. Child abuse costs tax payers millions of dollars each year. During 2007, the Department of Child and Family Services in Carbon County investigated 340 child abuse and neglect cases. Out of those cases, 207 children were found to be abused and or neglected.
Emery County investigated 84 cases of suspected child abuse, and 59 children were found to be victims of child abuse and or neglect.
So we ask you, the citizens of Carbon and Emery Counties, to join in our commitment of the prevention and treatment of child abuse by, proclaiming April as Child Abuse Awareness Month. Place a “Blue Ribbon” outside your home, on your business window, or pin it on your shirt during the month of April. This signifies that you are committed in protecting our greatest asset, our children.
Please drive past the center, 108 North 300 East, Price, and see 207 pinwheels, each representing a child that was abused in 2007, in Carbon County.
