On Saturday, March 29, Carbon High School hosted its annual invitational track meet.
“The event was sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance and Richard Hackwell,” said assistant coach Stew Foster. “They really help out our team.”
Ten teams participated, including Lone Peak, Springville, Juan Diego, North Summit, Carbon, Uintah, Grand, Duchesne, Lehi, and Union High School.
“The boys team placed fifth and were only one point out of fourth place and 12 points behind third place Juan Diego,” said Foster.
Kent Olsen placed fourth in the boys 1600 meter run, to take home one of the medals.
Brock Morley looked good as he placed pin the 300 meter hurdles, only feet away from first place. He also placed sixth in the finals of the 110 meter high hurdles and seventh place in the javelin.
Brett Wells had a great meet by placing third in the high hurdles, fifth in the 300 meter hurdles and eighth in the high jump.
Braden Watkins placed eighth in the finals for the 300 meter hurdles.
Jordon Taton lead the boy sprinters by placing sixth in the 200 meter sprint finals and seventh in the long jump.
Robert Lowe placed eighth in the 800 meter.
“Our boys also placed third in the 4×400 meter relay. The team was made up of Robert Lowe, Brett Wells, Jared Richens, and Brock Morley,” said Foster. “Our boys medley relay placed third with Kaleb Kulow bringing home the anchor 800 meter for Carbon.”
Ryan Rassmussen led the boys in the high jump with a first place finish with Jed Prettyman clearing the same height for second place.
“Ryan won it on fewer misses,” added Foster.
The girls team placed sixth out of 10 teams.
The girls were lead by Megan Garvin who placed second even though she cleared the same height as the girl from Juan Diego who was first.
Megan cleared 5′ 4″ and also qualified for state.
Chantel Jensen placed third in the high jump.
Felicia Olmos qualified for the finals in the 100 meter run, where she placed eighth. She later came back in the finals of the 200 meter sprint to place fourth.
“Patricia Smith likes to work so we put her in all three distance runs. She placed sixth in the 1600, seventh in the 3200, and eighth in the 800 meter run,” said Foster.
She also helped the girls 4×400 meter relay to place third as a team. The 4×400 meter relay was made up of Felica Olmos, Patricia Smith, Karris Nelson, and Chantel Jensen.
“The boys and girls are coming along great,” said head coach Jimmy Jewkes. And they show a lot of promise.The dinos next meet will be April 1 at Delta.
