Justin Jones sends the ball down field in an earlier game against Canyonview. |
The Carbon High soccer team is venturing into unknown territory as they continue to pile on the victories. This time it was Grantsville who fell victim to the Dinos on Wednesday by the score of 2-1.
In a game that had a similar rhythm to the Canyonview contest last, the first half of play was pretty even. Each team scored a goal to knot it up at one apiece.
The Cowboys were playing with their back-up goalie because their starter had been issued a red card in his previous game for swearing at the ref as he left the field after being given a yellow card. But it didn’t seem to matter as the Carbon attempted 11 shots on goal in the first half of play and only punched one into the net.
Carbon’s first half goal came on a corner shot by Jose Munoz that deflected off Justin Jones and was sent in by Beau Morley. “A real team effort,” remarked Coach Clifford.

But just like the Canyonview game, the Dinos came out and dominated the play in the second half. Only allowing the Cowboys four shots on the goal in the final period, Carbon controlled the play at the other end with 21 shots of their own.
The winning goal came after Grantsville cleared the ball to mid court. Cal Samuelson trapped it, dribbled a short distance and then booted a long high kick that sailed just under the top of the cross bar, out of reach of the goalie.
Clifford was glad to see the great effort of the team pay off in a win. “It is frustrating to see so many of our shots just miss. We dominated the second half and anything short of a win would not have felt fair.” He went on to say, “Grantsville is a good team and we are happy to come away with the win after playing a team with so much talent. Our team is continuing to mature and they believe they can win.”
A well deserved rest and some good practice time will help prepare the Dinos for their next match-up on Thursday, March 27 at South Summit. They will return home for a Saturday meeting with Grand on the Carbon High soccer field with the varsity game kick-off at 1 pm. Region play begins April 4 in Delta.
