Carbon’s bats came up big during their 10th inning win over the Union Cougars in Roosevelt.

The Carbon Dino baseball team traveled up to Roosevelt to play Union on Tuesday afternoon. They didn’t expect the game to last until evening. The game went so long that the JV game ended up cancelled due to darkness. The Dinos survived a scrappy Union team and came away with a 10 inning 11-9 win over the Cougars.
A key hit in the first by Hayden Basinger drove in a pair and was followed up by another double by Dayton Martindale to drive in two more. Carbon jumped out to a 6-0 lead right off the bat.
But Union chipped away at the lead as the Dinos failed to score in the next three innings. By the bottom of the fourth it was all tied up. Carbon had several chances to put the game away early, but could not string together the hits to drive in the runs.
Dylan Olsen came on in relief and pitched six strong innings.
Carbon finally posted a run in the fifth that was answered by Union in their half of the inning. Union took the lead by a run in the sixth and then the Dinos answered with one of their own in the seventh.
Each team added a run in the ninth before Carbon found a way to send two across in the 10th. The Cougars went scoreless and the Dino had held on to claim the victory.
Union out hit the Dinos 17-7 in the 11 inning affair. Spotty Dino defense kept the damage to a minimum. Still Coach Moynier felt like the numerous errors they committed were what let Union back in the game after being up by six.
The Carbon offense managed to parlay its seven hits into 11 runs as they took advantage of five Cougar errors. Brandon Branch and Austin Davis came through with hits in the final inning to drive the needed runs across the plate.
Due to injury and minor discipline issues Martindale, Basinger and Davis got a chance to play and made the best of it. Coach Moynier was very pleased with the effort he got from these young players.
After time off for spring break, the Dinos will resume action at home on Tuesday, March 25 against ALA with game time at 3 p.m. Region play will start Tuesday, April 1 at home with a double header with North Sanpete with the first game at 2:00 p.m.
