Even though snow is still covering many places, the baseball, soccer and softball fields have been plowed clear and are ready to see action as the spring line up of prep sports gets underway.
Leading off for the Dinos is the Carbon High baseball team. They saw their first action on Tuesday with a trip to Moab to take on Grand. In a close game, the Dinos were handed a 5-6 loss.
Dylan Olson started on the mound. Ron Herrera also threw a few good innings for the team. Greg Barker was the pitcher of record for the Dinos. Carbon jumped out with a lead by scoring in the first and the thirds. It wasn’t until the fifth when Grand took the lead with a three run inning to go ahead 4-2.
The Dinos answered with a run in the sixth, but Grand added a pair in the bottom of the inning to jump out 6-4. The Dinos came back with a pair of their own in the seventh but it fell a run short of tyeing the game. Matt Salas hit a triple and Brandon Branch slammed a double off the wall in the loss.
It was the first time the team had been able to even practice outside the gym and the rust showed according to Coach Troy Moynier. “The team defense was much better than expected with the lack of true fielding practice, but it was the lack of hitting that lost the game for the squad,” he said. “But it is early and, hopefully, our offense will pick it up.”
The Dinos head to St. George for a tournament on Thursday.
They will face Dixie, Tooele and Wasatch. This will be a true test for the team as all three teams are powerful.
Dixie and Tooele are also 4A teams this season.
