The Cubs could win a world series this year. We could have the country’s first female president of the United States. I could become a world renowned artist.
All of the above are entirely plausible, but all of the above are long shots. Long shots are what make life interesting. We love to root for the underdog. That may be one reason there are so many Cub fans out there.
Yet it’s hard to think of Hilary Clinton as an underdog. She is leading the polls and the fund raising game in her bid for the highest office in the land. But in the fact she is a women, she is an underdog. We are not sure, as a country, if we are ready to make the jump into being led by a woman.
For me, it isn’t about whether or not she is a women that will get my vote, but for the entire package she brings to the table. I tend to vote middle to the left in my trends. I’m sure most of you that read me regularly have picked up on that already.
But I do not vote labels. Democrat or Republican, man, woman or ethnicity aside; I want to be represented by someone who most closely matches my values.
Of course what I really yearn for is a really great president in the likeness of JFK or Eisenhower or Teddy Roosevelt. Why is it that our present crop of candidates don’t make me want to rush out and vote?
Oh, I will vote, but I will have to look deep to decide where to cast my voice. I hope in the end it doesn’t boil down to the lesser of two evils. It is hard to believe that even in midst of one of the longest political campaign seasons in our country’s history, there is not anyone who screams out “greatness.”
The sad thing is too many people will vote by label. Some Democrats will vote Democrat no matter who ends up with the nomination and some Republicans will do the same. I guess that is why in some areas that have a majority lock of one political party or another we have Democrat/Republicans and Republican/Democrats.
When our forefathers made sure we would have representation elected by the people, for the people, I don’t think they meant by the party, for the party.
So I urge us all to go into the next year with our minds open to anyone who chooses to step up to the plate. Hopefully there will be someone who rises above the fray to truly represent us all.
Speaking of election, don’t forget to vote next month. There is only one issue to cast your ballot for and I can guarantee, on this issue, your vote will matter. The school voucher issue is up for special election Nov. 6. No matter how you feel about this critical matter, you need to vote.
And as for the Cubs, no matter what, there is always next year.
