With a late winter storm moving through the state early in the week, Carbon did not go up to play Juan Diego as scheduled Tuesday. Instead they set their sites on the Friday match up with Emery.
Even though Emery is ranked fifth in 3A, it was Carbon that came out on top in their first of three meetings this season. The Dinos bats did the damage as they trounced Emery 10-3. Without any time to blink, they headed up north and took on Juan Diego for the two games they had postponed. This time the results were mixed. Juan Diego took game one 10-0 while Carbon bounced back and stole game two 9-8.
On Friday down in Castle Dale, the Dinos jumped out early with a 2-0 lead. Emery could not put one on the board until the third. The Dinos scored a double in each of the next four innings while only allowing the Spartans two more in the fifth. Kyle Asay got the win in a well pitched game. Coach Moynier was impressed with the way Asay held his own against the ace for Emery, Edgehouse. After striking out his first two times at bat, JJ Blue hit a double and a long ball in the win. The Dinos made good use of their nine hits to score their 10 runs.

Kyle Asay launches one to home plate during an earlier game vs. ALA. Asay pitched well vs. Emery on Friday recording the win. JJ Blue also came up big against the Spartans with a home run and a double. The Dino’s beat the Spartans 10-3 in Castle Dale on Friday.

The bats were not as hot for Carbon in game one against Juan Diego on Saturday. Coach Moynier felt like his team did not come prepared to play in the first game. “Maybe they just had a let down after the emotional win over Emery.” They could not string together the hits to push even one run across as Juan Diego shut them out. Tyler Turcasso took the loss for the Dinos. It was a disastrous third inning that was the downfall for Carbon. Juan Diego scored seven in the inning to seal the deal.
Despite the beating, Carbon shook it off and came back to play some solid ball. They took the lead in the first with three runs and then added five more in the second before Juan Diego started to climb back in the game. The third tough game in two days took its toll on the pitching staff and they began to walk the opposition. Jordan Moynier came on to finish the game despite pitching substantial innings in game one.
Going into the seventh with a slim 8-7 lead, JJ Blue belted one over the fence to give Carbon just the cushion they needed. Juan Diego tried to tie it up, but they were shut down after only one run. Carbon held on to win by a point. Coach Moynier was happy to end the week with two out of three wins. “These were a tough three games against two very good teams. And even though the team got beat up on in the first Juan Diego game, we had a talk and they made the adjustments needed and came back to play a good game to finish it off.”
The Dinos sit in second place in region eight play. They are tied at 2-1 with Juan Diego. Delta holds on to first with a 2-0 record. With spring break looming, the Dinos do not play again until April 10. It will be a home game against North Sanpete with first pitch at 3:30.
